Description

Tvareekh Guru Khalsa is an immense narrative detailing the history of the Sikhs from Guru Nanak Dev Ji to loss of the Khalsa Raj to the British.

Giani Gian Singh Nirmala (1822 – 1921) wrote this epic work under the pupilage of the highly respected Nirmala Sant – Tara Singh Narotam.  He spent more that 15 years gathering information, mainly from elders including his own – Nagahia Singh, Raghu Singh and Bakhta Singh who had served Guru Gobind Singh, Banda Singh Bahadur and the eighteenth century sardars such as Nawab Kapur Singh and Baba Ala Singh. He also travelled extensively to source more material for this important work and makes reference to Rattan Singh Bhangu’s Panth Prakash as well as writing of Bute Shah.

Tvarikh Guru Khalsa is divided into five parts: Janam Sakhi Dasari Guruari, Shamsher Khalsa, Raj Khalsa, Sardar Khalsa and Panth Khalsa.

The first part details the Janam Sakhis of the Ten Gurus and outlines how the Sikh community evolved and blossomed with the Khalsa revolution.

The second part charts the life of Banda Singh Bahadur and how the Sikhs waged war against the Mughals.  It then tells of the formation of Dal Khalsa and the ongoing battles between Afghan Emperor Ahmad Shah Abdali (also known as Ahmed Shah Durrani) and the Sikhs.

The third part describes the ascendency of the twelve misls (confederacies) and their eventual consolidation into a sovereign Khalsa kingdom under Maharaja Ranjit Singh and then ends with the annexation of the Khalsa Raj by the British.

The fourth part contains details about Sikh principalities which were not in Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s kingdom.

The fifth part gives an important account of Sikh sampraday (orders), historical gurdwaras and centres of learning.

A hugely significant work of history that deserves a place in your library to read, contemplate and learn from.
